1,000 applications pending for SC/ST/OBC scholarships, education department shut down

With over 1,000 applications for various scholarships to students from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other backward classes left pending after the end of the 2021-2022 fiscal year, the SC/ST/OBC Welfare Department has withdrew the Department of Education during the delay.

In a letter to the Director of Education, the Secretary of Delhi Government Department for Welfare of SC/ST/OBCs said that a review of the implementation of socio-economic development programs of SCs and of ST showed a large number of scholarship applications pending disposal.

The Department of Social Affairs found that there were 918 pending applications for private school tuition reimbursement for 2021-2022. In the same year, there were 397 pending applications for the SC Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme and 20 for the SC Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme.

“As 2021-22 has already ended and the scholarship for the year should have been disbursed to recipients much sooner, urgent attention is needed to ensure that all pending applications are verified immediately and forwarded to this department for avoid further delaying the payment of benefits to eligible recipients,” the letter reads.

Information on the implementation of these bursaries has been verified by the Department of Social Affairs after being requested as part of the Parliamentary Committee on SC/ST’s review of the “Implementation of Reservation Policy in states and union territories, including socio-economic development of SC/ST”.

Following this, the DoE wrote to the heads of all schools urging them not to complete the online verification of these applications.
