How to Change Windows 11 Default Browser

Windows comes with Edge as the default browser. Although it has made rapid progress over the years, overtaking Safari as the second most popular desktop web browser, Google Chrome still dominates the market by a considerable margin.

This is good news for you because you don’t have to stick to the default or only the most popular browsers like Chrome. You can and should experiment with a variety of browsers, especially these days where almost every major tech company collects and sells your data to advertisers. Brave, Firefox, and Tor Browser are some of the more obvious options to choose from.

So how do you change your default Windows 11 browser? Let’s find out.

How to Change Default Browser on Windows 11

Like its predecessors, Microsoft has set Edge as the default browser for Windows 11 computers. But with a simple tweak in Settings, you can change that. Here’s how.

Go to the The start menu search bar, type in “parameters” and select the best match. Otherwise, press Win + I. In the Settings menu, select the apps option and click Default apps.

Now find the browser you want to use and click on it to see the options you can choose from. Finally click on Define by default to set this browser as the default browser.

In our case, for example, we changed our default browser to Mozilla Firefox.

Another way to switch browsers

For most Windows users, the above method will suffice and let you get your job done easily. But on rare occasions, like anything technical, it can fail you; this is where you may need to try an alternative hack. Here’s what you can do.

Navigate to the settings page of the individual browser you wish to set as the default browser and make the appropriate changes from there. If you’re using the Brave browser, for example, just click on settings in the top right corner (three dashes) and select the Settings option.

Select now Begin and click on the Default option placed in front of the default browser. That’s it. Brave will be your default browser from now on.

Similarly, if you are on Firefox, click on the Settings browser option, go to General settings page, and click Default to set Firefox as the default browser.

You can do this with any other browser, the underlying process will be the same.

Which browser should you switch to?

So now you know that you can change Windows 11 default browsers, along with the process to do so. However, what are some good browsers you can switch to?

People usually opt for one of the larger browsers; these are Google Chrome, Safari and Mozilla Firefox. However, these are by no means the only browsers you can try.

For example, if you are passionate about security and privacy, you can choose an open source browser so that you are never caught off guard by a hidden process. And there are many free anonymous browsers that hide your online presence and protect your privacy.

Change default browser on Windows 11

So it’s all about changing your default Windows browser, folks. Any of the above methods should make it easy to change your default browser and help you easily change your settings. Microsoft ships your Windows with many default programs, but like the browser, you don’t have to settle for them.

It’s no secret how resource-intensive some of the mainstream browsers tend to be. If your computer is at the lower end of memory resources, be sure to check the lighter options first.
