Live updates: The flood situation in Assam deteriorated on Tuesday, with five more people losing their lives and 2.49 million people suffering from the deluge, officials said. Most parts of Silchar, in the Cachar district, remained under water – more than a week now, they said. Three people died in Cachar and one in Morigaon and one in Dhubri. With those deaths, the toll from this year’s floods rose to 139, they added. Three people were also missing, two in Cachar and one in Chirang district, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
After waiting behind the scenes of the week-long political drama sparked by Minister Shiv Sena’s rebellion, Eknath Shinde, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis met with Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari on Tuesday evening and asked him to ask the Uddhav Thackeray government of the state to prove its majority in the Assembly. Fadnavis said the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress coalition government appeared to be in the minority, with 39 Sena lawmakers from the Shinde faction saying they did not support it.
Responding to a startling and growing outbreak of monkeypox, U.S. health officials on Tuesday expanded the group of people recommended to get vaccinated against the monkeypox virus. They also said they were providing more monkeypox vaccines, working to expand testing and taking other steps to try to get ahead of the outbreak.
