The thing we all do the most in Google Chrome just got a whole lot faster

You are spoiled for choice when it comes to browsers from Big Tech and the like. Chrome is getting faster and less memory-intensive to keep its edge, so to speak.


A recent Chromium blog post revealed performance improvements, starting with faster searches. When you type a search into Chrome’s Omnibox (the search bar at the top of the browser), you get suggestions to go with your query before you’ve even finished typing entire words or phrases.

Your search suggestions are about to get even faster, as Chrome prereads the search results for the suggestions you’re most likely to select. When you choose one of the best suggestions, you get search results faster. Google said search results are now four times more likely to appear in less than 500 milliseconds.

Google notes that this feature only works if Google Search is your default search engine, although other search providers may integrate this feature.

Chrome’s new memory allocator, “PatitionAlloc”, targets reduced memory usage without compromising security and performance. The latest updates show that it reduces RAM usage by 22% for Windows and Android with 9% faster responsiveness.

Chrome OS shows a total memory footprint reduction of 15%, with a 20% reduction in browser process memory. This will reduce the pressure on your device’s memory while providing faster browser performance.

More stable

A few years ago, the developers of Chrome added a caching feature to improve boot time. While improving performance, it can also consume memory and lead to crashes.

Google investigated this issue and found it to be the main culprit behind browser shutdown blocks. In other words, the cache would sometimes cause freezes or slowdowns when users shut down Chrome. The cache was deleted with the resulting shutdown hang.
